Vice Premier on Reform of Postgraduate Education

Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing Wednesday urged the educational departments to further reform academic degrees and postgraduate education to train more high-caliber personnel for the country's modernization drive.

Li, also chairman of Academic Degrees Committee (ADC) of the State Council, made the remarks while addressing the 18th session of the committee.

Li urged educational departments to step up the pace of reform in the readjustment and structure of postgraduate education, especially the structure of subjects. Efforts should be made to strengthen key subjects, like information technology, biology, new materials, new energy and environment protection.

He noted that in the past years, the ADC and the Ministry of Education have made some readjustments in the setting of academic degrees and postgraduate education.

He admitted the scale and quality of postgraduates still fail to meet the needs of technical innovation and social development.

The problems of the irrational setting of subjects still exists, said Li, adding that some high-tech subjects are faced with a poor basis and lack of high-quality personnel.

Li said the educational style and means should also be reformed and international cooperation and exchange in the industry encouraged.
