Shanghai Port Sees Shipping Volume Record HighShanghai Port, the third largest in the world, had shipped 200 million tons of goods up to Monday, becoming the first port in China to record an annual throughput above the 200 million mark.The port's throughput is expected to reach 203 million tons by the end of the year, up 8 percent compared to last year, or two times the volume of 1984. Statistics show that import and export through Shanghai Port will increase by 20 percent this year and container shipments via the port will reach 5.55 million. Both the figures are records for the port. Shanghai Port is the third largest port in the world after Rotterdam of the Netherlands and Singapore. The port's ranking for container shipments has risen from 20th in 1995 to 6th today. Shanghai Port has 70 berths for ships of 10,000-ton displacement or above, and 16 international berths for container shipment. Container ships depart Shanghai for over 120 ports around the globe. Shipping companies from the United States, Denmark and many other countries have opened liner routes at the Shanghai Port. |
