Heavily Armed Gunman Kills Seven in US

Seven people were killed Tuesday when a heavily armed gunman opened fire in Wakefield of Massachusetts State, the United States.

The shooting took place at about 11 a.m. local time at the corporate headquarters of Edgewater Technology, an Internet consulting firm based in Wakefield about 24 kilometers northwest of Boston City.

Police said they have arrested an employee of Edgewater Technology, named Michael McDermott, aged 42.

McDermott was armed with three weapons -- an AK-47 assault rifle, a shotgun and a semi-automatic handgun -- when police found him in the lobby of the office complex.

"Wakefield police were able to subdue McDermott, wrestle him to the ground and place him in custody and to disarm him," Middlesex County Assistant District Attorney John McEvoy said. "He is going to be charged with seven counts of murder."

Police went through the building and discovered seven victims, all of whom died from gunshot wounds, McEvoy said, adding that there were no additional gunmen or injuries.

McEvoy said the gunman was a current employee of the company and had been employed there since last March.

Edgewater spokesman Kevin Carvin said that the software consulting company had about 35 people at the Wakefield location.

The company is in the process of moving its headquarters from Fayetteville, Arkansas State, to Wakefield.
