Yellow River Water Conservancy Project Launched

The foundation for Yellow River Shapotou Water Conservancy Project in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was laid Tuesday, December 26.

With total investment of 1.3 billion yuan, the project is one of the first of 10 major projects in the country's strategy of developing western regions.

On completion, the project will improve the irrigation system across nearly 10,000 ha of cultivated land and save 160 million cubic meters of water every year. The project can generate 600 million kilowatts of energy every year.

The project will curb the salinization of the irrigation area.

The project will be completed by 2003.
