World's Largest Municipal ATM Network Built in Shanghai

Renovation of Shanghai's broad band telecommunications network wound up recently, indicating that Shanghai has built the world's largest Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) municipal local area network (LAN).

The renovated broad band network has a capacity equaling 625,000 pairs of telephone lines.

The establishment of the broad band network is expected to satisfy requirements for transfer of sound and pictures as well as for digital multi-media communications.

Meanwhile, Shanghai has put into operation optical fibers measuring 320,000 kilometers to cover 90 percent of buildings and residential districts with optical fiber.

Shanghai also enlarged the capacity of its asymmetrical digital subscriber loop (ADSL) this year, which ultimately benefited four million residents.
