Negative Population Growth in Shanghai for 8 Years

China's largest city of Shanghai is expected to report a negative natural population growth of minus 0.08 percent this year.

This year will be the eighth consecutive year that Shanghai has registered a negative population growth.

The permanent population in the city will reach 15 million by the end of this year.

During the past five years, Shanghai has maintained an annual birth rate of 0.55 percent, with an annual natural population growth rate of minus 0.132 percent. The past five years saw a population increase of 850,000 permanent residents in Shanghai, including 396,000 newly born in the city.
