China Kicks Off Construction of Second IC Base

Construction of China's second integrated circuit (IC) design and industrialization base was recently started in Xi'an High-tech Development Zone, northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

China's first IC design and industrialization base started construction early this year in Shanghai, the country's leading industrial and commercial center.

The Xi'an IC base is expected to be an important incubator for IC enterprises, a marketing center, information service center, an IC products trading center and a center for technological development and personnel training in three to five years, according to reliable sources.

The first phase of the project involves buildings with a floor space of 5,000 square meters.

Liu Fengbo, director of the Xi'an IC Engineering Technology Research Center, cited a series of advantages that Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi, boasts in the development of IC industries. The advantages include more than 3,000 people who are engaged in the IC research, teaching and design for several thousand undergraduates and postgraduates majoring in the IC research, and a group of experts.

Xi'an also has a group of units such as Xi'an University of Electronic Sciences, Xi'an Micro-electronics Research Institute and Xi'an Datang Telecom Co., Ltd, which has experiences in the research and development of IC, Liu added.

China now has more than 20 IC design companies.
