China Steams Towards Development GoalChina is vigorously pushing ahead its modernization drive as the national economy steams into a new century of ambitious growth and unprecedented prosperity, observers said. With the goal of becoming a moderately developed country by the middle of the 21st century, the country has put economic restructuring at the core of its development plan for the coming decades. The relations between various economic sectors will be readjusted, with the position of the agricultural sector to be greatly enhanced. Meanwhile, the industrial sector will be overhauled, reorganized and upgraded. The service industry will expand rapidly while information technologies are widely applied in all aspects of economic and social lives. Massive construction of infrastructures such as water conservation, transportation and energy will be under way. The country will also accelerate the development of its western areas so as to narrow the gap between coastal and inland areas. China will try to lift the development standards of rural areas to those of urban areas in the course of promoting urbanization. Over the past two decades, the country's gross domestic product (GDP) has doubled. The per capita GDP average reached 800 U.S. dollars this year. As the Chinese people become wealthier in the next few decades, the government will consider how to adapt the economy to the big changes in consumption demands. According to the central government, scientific and technological advancement will be prioritized and innovation will be the major driving force of economic development. |
