Ethic and Cultural Progress Stressed for 2001

Ding Guangen, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, called Monday for nationwide efforts to further promote the ethic and cultural progress in the new era.

Ding, also director of the Central Commission for Guiding Ethic and Cultural Progress (CCGECP), presided over a plenary session of the CCGECP, which opened in Beijing Monday.

He urged departments at all levels to hold high the great banner of Deng Xiaoping Theory to make great achievements in ethic and cultural progress next year.

He said that 2001 is the start of a new era that is important in Chinese history and China's socialist modernization construction.

Ding noted that to promote ethic and cultural progress will help provide a good social environment for reform and development next year.

He stressed governments at all levels should push forward this work while fulfilling economic tasks and striving to improve the people's ethic and scientific standards.

Efforts should also be made to liven up the cultural life of citizens and to provide more cultural services to the general public, Ding stressed.

Li Tieying, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and deputy director of the CCGECP, also delivered a speech at the meeting.
