FM Spokeswoman on Vice-President's Five-Nation Tour

The upcoming visit to Iran, Syria, Jordan, Cyprus and Uganda by Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao will further the mutual understanding, friendship, consensus and cooperation between China and these five countries, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday, December 26.

During the visit, scheduled for January 5-19, 2001, Hu will discuss with leaders of the five countries bilateral, international and regional issues of common concern, spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue of the ministry said at a regular press conference Tuesday afternoon.

The five countries are all developing countries that hold the same or similar views with China on many international and regional issues, Zhang said, adding that the visit will further the relations between China and the five nations.

She said that Hu will also exchange views with leaders of the five countries on major international and regional issues, including the Middle East situation, and further elaborate China's stance on related issues.

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China has always been concerned about the development of the Middle East situation and has made unremitting efforts to promote the Middle East peace process, Zhang said.

The spokeswoman said that China will continue to work with the international community and make its due contribution for an early realization of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the Middle East.
