Inter-parliament Exchanges Important, Li Peng

The exchanges between China's National People's Congress and the Vietnamese National Assembly constitute an important part of Chinese-Vietnamese ties, said Li Peng, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Tuesday, December 26.

Li's remarks came in his meeting with Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong.

Li spoke highly of the Beibu Bay demarcation and relevant fishing cooperation agreements signed between the two countries Monday, describing the documents as "common fruition."

As neighbors with long-standing friendship, Li said, China and Vietnam have scored new growth in bilateral ties in recent years.

He told Luong that the Communist Party of China and the Communist Party of Vietnam "shared common goals." However, with different national conditions, "each should also have one's own characteristics," he said, adding that the two sides should exchange experience frequently and support the other.

As China's top legislator, he said that NPC attaches importance to its ties with Vietnamese National Assembly and briefed the guests efforts made by NPC to promote democracy and legal construction.

Luong, again, highly hailed the 1999 land border demarcation and the just-signed Beibu Bay demarcation agreements, as well as efforts made by top leaders between the two countries to boost bilateral ties, saying that the documents "bring benefits to the two peoples."

Luong told Li that both Vietnam and China are making efforts to build socialism tailored to each others own conditions and are willing to contribute to the peace, cooperation and development in the region. "Our relations boast a bright future," he said.

Li also shared views on the multi-polarization and globalization of the world with Luong.
