State Power Giant Closes Small Plants

The State Power Corp, the nation's largest power supplier, has closed down small thermal power plants with a total generating capacity of 3.11 million kilowatts this year.

The closure of the Yushuchuan Power Plant in northeast China's Jilin Province Monday was the largest of its kind to have been closed so far.

Since 1997, the power giant has shut down small thermal power plants with a total installed capacity of 7.78 million kilowatts, 80 percent of the nation's total.

With the closure of these small thermal power plants, the company has saved 30 million tons and reduced emission of millions of tons of carbon dioxide over the past three years, the paper said.

Though more than 70 percent of the country's electric power comes from thermal power plants, China has vowed to close down more plants in the 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-2005) period.

The State Power Corp is ready to closed down small power plants with installed capacity of 1.4 million kilowatts next year, and is set to close all 14 million kilowatts plants by 2003.
