British Queen Elizabeth Urges World to Work for Peace

Britain's Queen Elizabeth on Monday urged the world in her Christmas message to work for peace.

The queen, making religion the focus of her television and Internet broadcast, said all religions provided divine inspiration and practical guidance for people.

She stressed that all faiths were important and said she believed most people looked for spiritual guidance.

"Whether we believe in God or not, I think most of us have a sense of the spiritual, that recognition of a deeper meaning and purpose in our lives, and I believe that this sense flourishes despite the pressures of our world," she said.

The queen's traditional Christmas message was interspersed with film footage of her and other members of the royal family going about their duties, from paying state visits to meeting the homeless.

This Millennium year has been an unforgettable one, she said in her Christmas broadcast.
