Largest Aluminum Factory Sees Output Rise

Shanxi Aluminum Factory, in north China, has produced 1.2 million tons of alumina up to Monday, December 25, fulfilling its annual production target in advance.

The factory is China's largest alumina producing base. Its output accounts for one-third of the country's total. The factory has a domestic market share of 30 percent.

It took 20 years to complete the construction of the factory, with a total investment of 5.1 billion yuan (US$614 million).

The factory has turned out a total of seven million tons of alumina since trial operation of its first-phase project began in 1987.
