Chinese Workers Urged to Acquire Computer SkillsWei Jianxing, chairman of All-China Federation of Trade Unions, called on workers and employees of institutions to increase their knowledge in the use computers to become more qualified.Wei, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, made the remarks at a meeting for commending winners of a national computer knowledge contest. He said over 50 percent of middle-aged and young people in China's enterprises and institutions are required to know basic knowledge and have basic skills of operating computers in the next three years. The All-China Federation of Trade Unions and three other government departments jointly launched the nation-wide computer knowledge promotion operation at the beginning of this year and over 12 million people have taken part in the training. The aim of the move is to improve the qualifications of workers and to push along the national computerization drive. A total of 247 people from 48 teams took part in the national computer knowledge contest, which produced 64 winners. Of those participants in the contest, over 53 percent are workers. |
