Draft Amendment to Marriage Law Debated

Draft Amendment to Marriage Law Debated
Chinese lawmakers eagerly expressed their views on the draft amendment to the Marriage Law at a joint law-reviewing meeting held December 25 by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.

Li Peng, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the joint conference.

Such kind of joint meeting of reviewing draft law has not been held by the law-making body since 1988.

Participants were so enthusiastic that the meeting staff were busy selecting a lecturer after one had completed his presentation.

During the whole session a total of 14 lawmakers got the chances to offer their views on some heatedly-debated issues, such as definition of bigamy and illegal marriage, punishments to those people having a fixed sex partner out of marriage, domestic violence, property ownership in divorce cases, and so on.

Li Peng hailed the joint meeting, noting that the participants have given the in-depth views on a wide range of topics, which has laid a solid foundation for the future review of the amendment.
