China Promotes International Cooperation for Scientific, Economic Development

China will open more channels to carry out international cooperation to facilitate its national economic growth and scientific development, said a leading official in charge of science and technology Monday, December 25.

At a working conference on foreign affairs in the field of science and technology, Zhu Lilan, minister of Science and Technology, said that the ministry will earmark funds to support international cooperation in science in the coming five years and to organize state-level major cooperation projects.

The three-day meeting will focus on policies and measures on China's future international scientific and technological cooperation.

China must pay equal attention on domestic and external market and resources, push forward exports of high-technology products and exploit international market, said Zhu.

China should actively promote the trade of electronic products and information technology, and participate in formulation of international standards on intellectual property rights and new products and technology, Zhu said.

She noted China should keep up with the latest trend of world scientific and technological development, and make full use of international funds, technology, equipment, intelligence, intellectual property rights and various achievements in the world.

Statistics show that China's export of high-tech products from January to November this year increased by 51.9 percent over the corresponding period of last year, and the import of high-tech products grew 39.2 percent. Over three quarters of the imports and exports are computers and products of communications, electronic technology and products.

The growth of export of high-tech products changed China's traditional trade structure, and the introduction of computers, communications and advanced electronic technology increased China' s level of industrialization, said Zhu.

However, she pointed out, the growth rate of China's high-tech industry still lag far behind the developed countries, and the major technologies in the high-technology sector still depends on import.
