China Ceased 820 Chinese Newspapers/Periodicals
China has ceased publication of 820 newspapers and periodicals since 1997 and this has likewise greatly helped optimize the country's publishing, according to sources from the National Conference on Newspaper Management lately held in Hefei, Anhui Province.
As is demanded by the CPC Central Committee, the State Press and Publication Administration (SPPA) has taken various measures to put in order irregular circulation and publication of newspapers and periodicals and to optimize the structure of the country's publishing, said Shi Zhongyuan, director of SPPA.
By the end of last June, altogether 324 newspapers and 496 periodicals have ceased publication, thereby effecting a change in the country's publication from merely eyeing on publishing to facing markets and a change from stressing merely on quantity to a raise of quality and efficiency.
However, there still exist some problems affecting China's publication work like undisciplined illegal publishing, putting out poor quality books and disorderly management. Efforts will be made by SPPA to see to it that brand name publishing be developed and the country will rise as a world-class "Media Giant". As are required, the priorities will be placed on three aspects, namely, setting up a "Periodical Phalanx", creating a news media with big clout in the world and guaranteeing a sound development of the country's newspaper conglomerates launched.
