Shanghai Set Targets for Information Industry Development

Shanghai is determined to turn itself into the most important communications hub in the Asia- Pacific region.

During a working conference on information industry development which convened in the city recently, it was put forward that the information industry in the city should maintain a growth rate of over 25 percent for the coming five years and account for over 13 percent of the city's total GDP.

The users of Internet, cable TV, fixed and mobile phone have respectively reached 1.8 million, 3.15 million, 5.3 million and 3 million by the end of this year.

The output value of information industry is expected to exceed 130 billion yuan, accounting 7 percent of the city's GDP.

Mayor Huang Ju stressed the importance of spreading information technology in all fields.

Information industry in the city should grow at a rate exceeding the average growth of major cities in industrialized nations, he said.
