South African Bus Crash Kills 20 Holiday Travelers
An overloaded bus plunged off a mountain road in South Africa early Sunday, killing 20 passengers, including a 3-year-old girl found clutching her Christmas present.
About 55 people were injured, nine of them critically. Six of the dead were children. All were thought to be South African.
The driver lost control of the bus while negotiating a bend on a steep pass in the eastern part of the country, 560 miles south of Johannesburg, police spokeswoman Shannon Kirkhoff said.
The bus was taking vacationers from Cape Town to the small town of Butterworth.
