kwasniewski Pledges to Win EU Membership for Poland in Second Term
President-elect Aleksander Kwasniewski, sworn in on Saturday as Poland's new president for an unprecedented second five-year term, said it was a historical task to lead his country into the European Union (EU) during the next five years.
In a speech delivered at the inauguration ceremony, Kwasniewski said his government will also strive to achieve faster economic growth, carry the on-going reforms through to the end while making efforts to maintain social stability.
The entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was the biggest achievement his government made during his first term in office, said the 46-year-old Kwasniewski, who won re-election in early October.
Poland became a NATO member in March 1999. As one of the six first-batch candidates, Poland entered EU membership talks in March 1998.
The Polish president said that he will also fight against poverty, high unemployment, worsening social order and corruption during his second term.
It is imperative to implement the national education and information development programs, he added.
Kwasniewski, accompanied by his wife Jolanta, was sworn in by the Polish Parliament.
