Guangxi Has No Ethnic Problem: Cao Bochun

Guangxi has no ethnic problems whatsoever but the problem of development, said Cao Bochun, Party secretary of CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Committee, in his speech delivered at the Guangxi Ethnic Affairs Work Conference held on Dec. 20.

The major task of Guangxi's ethnic work in the new era is to speed up social and economic development of the ethnic minorities and promote common prosperity of all ethnic peoples in the region, said Cao.

Cao pointed out that Guangxi is a provincial autonomous region known to have the largest population of ethnic peoples in China, populated for the most part by the Zhuangs along with 11 others to form a population size of as much high as 38% in the region. With culture and education further developed it has advances made in many other fields and medical work as well. In the past 50 years, no big ethnic problems have ever been given rise to in the region though ethnic disputes have long been an epidemic issue plaguing many other regions and countries abroad. In contrast, there has been brought about a fine situation in Guangxi: all ethnic peoples are united, economic advances have been made, people's life, social stability and national defense and security on the frontier are guaranteed.

Cao said that under an operational legal system the ethnic minority peoples have had their rights as masters of their own well protected in the region. Thanks to reform and opening up of China, economic construction being carried out and "aid-the-poor" programs launched, the people's livelihood in Guangxi has been much improved. Meanwhile, following the Party's policy on training a multitude of ethnic cadres many ethnic cadres have been promoted and these have come to take by now as much high as 35% in the whole region.

To conclude, Cao said though a world of difference has been found in things in Guangxi when compared with its past yet by its economy, weak infrastructure construction and its social, cultural and sci-tech development the region remains as yet at a low level. What is more, many impoverished people are still found in the region and will have to be helped to shake off poverty. It goes without saying the so-called ethnic problem of Guangxi is literally a problem of endeavor seeking for development. All public servants working at various levels in Guangxi should grasp the opportunities brought about by the implementation of the strategy of western China development and work hard to quicken economic development of the ethnic areas in Guangxi.
