Thailand Bans Imports of Meat Products From EU

Thailand has imposed a temporary ban on imports of meat products from the European Union (EU) to prevent the mad cow disease, according to a report of the Department of Livestock Development available here on Saturday.

The ban followed reports saying that three to five cows in Germany were found infected with the disease, which could cause brain problems to consumers.

Germany is a major member country of the 15-member EU, which is a key single market of the world.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the Japanese government was considering a proposal submitted by a group of experts, calling for the government to ban imports of cows and meat products from the EU for the same reason.

The Japanese government was likely to approve the proposal and to impose a ban on imported cows and meat products from the EU next month, said the report.
