Internet Users Exceed One Million in East China Province

The number of Internet users has expanded to more than 1 million in east China's Shandong Province since 1993 when it introduced its first Internet "163".

The "Government Online Project" initiated in January 1999 has given rise to the quick popularization of the Internet in the province, according to the Shandong Administration of Public

Information Affairs.

Approximately 80 percent of administrative organizations at all levels in Shandong are connected with the Internet, establishing their websites at "163" or "169".

An increasing number of enterprises and individuals have also gained access to the Internet, becoming the main users in the province.

Moreover, regarded as the information highway of Shandong, the Shandong Net under China Telecom Multimedia Broadband Net has developed into the largest broadband communication net in China, and can provide a variety of services including distance-therapy and distance-education.
