Special Scholarship Program for Poor College Students in Central China

Some 500 poor college students in central China's Hunan Province Friday were awarded with special scholarships for dedication to their studies and high moral standards

The special scholarship program for poor college students was initiated by the provincial government last year with a fund of 15.3 million yuan.

The winners received 6,000 yuan each in scholarships this year.

Last year, 300 poor college students won the awards, according to a local education official.

This year's winners come from 18 local colleges and universities, and the scholarship sum in the province is the largest of its kind compared to that in other provinces of the country, the official said.

The scholarship aims to help poverty-stricken college students in Hunan to be able to continue their studies, he added.
