Tibet Witnesses Faster Economic Growth

The gross domestic product (GDP) of Tibet Autonomous Region, southwest China, is expected to reach 11.65 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion) this year, an increase of 9.3 percent over last year.

According to the regional meeting on economic work, which opened in Lhasa Friday, the total grain output will amount to 946,700 tons, as the region is to have an abundant grain harvest for 13 consecutive years.

Rural enterprises have developed rapidly. As a result, the per capita net income for local farmers and herdsmen will be 1,325 yuan, a 5.3 percent increase on a yearly basis.

The region's total industrial output value is expected to reach 1.792 billion yuan (US$215.9 million), an annual increase of 8.2 percent. Many achievements have also been made in the reform of State-owned enterprises.

The tertiary sector is expected to harvest 5.38 billion yuan (US$648 million) in added value this year, or a 12.2 percent increase over last year.

Visitors to Tibet are expected to total 550,000. Tourism income will be 630 million yuan (US$75.9 million).

According to Friday's meeting, Tibet invested 6.658 billion yuan in fixed assets in 2000, an increase of 17.6 percent an on annual basis.

At the same time, other provinces of China allocated 520 million yuan in the construction of 163 projects in the region.
