China Mobile to Launch GPRS Network

As from the second quarter in the first year of the new century, China Mobile users may enjoy the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network, a new non-voice value-added service that allows information to be sent and received across the mobile phone highway network at a speed of up to 170 kbps.

After half a year experiments in seven provinces, December 21 saw China Mobile sign a framework agreement for its first-phase construction with equipment suppliers. The GPRS network will be linked up with 16 provinces and 25 cities across China.

Compatible with the previous GSM standard, GPRS plays a transitional role in upgrading the second generation to the third generation mobile network. Once the high-speed GPRS platform is established, computers could be easily connected to Internet through mobile phones.
