China Mobile to Launch GPRS NetworkAs from the second quarter in the first year of the new century, China Mobile users may enjoy the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network, a new non-voice value-added service that allows information to be sent and received across the mobile phone highway network at a speed of up to 170 kbps. After half a year experiments in seven provinces, December 21 saw China Mobile sign a framework agreement for its first-phase construction with equipment suppliers. The GPRS network will be linked up with 16 provinces and 25 cities across China. Compatible with the previous GSM standard, GPRS plays a transitional role in upgrading the second generation to the third generation mobile network. Once the high-speed GPRS platform is established, computers could be easily connected to Internet through mobile phones. By PD Online staff Li Yan |
