Circulation of China's First English-Chinese Dictionary Approaches 10 Million

The New English-Chinese Dictionary, the first bilingual dictionary on a foreign language ever compiled by the People's Republic of China since its founding in 1949, has approached 10 million in circulation.

The centennial edition of the dictionary was published Thursday, December 21, after a six-year revision. Many of the latest words like "mad cow disease" and "nano" were included.

The dictionary, compiled by professors at Fudan University and Southeast Normal University, was first published in 1975 during the Cultural Revolution, which aroused great sensation around the world.

The dictionary later in 1985 underwent a major revision and a revised and enlarged edition was published.
