900,000 Poor People in Guangxi Benefit from WB Loans

A poverty relief project for southwest China with the World Bank loans has improved the living standard of 900,000 poor people in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Since the project was launched in 1995, WB loans have been used to train 410,000 farmers, help 90,000 people to work aboard, and provide transport service for 310,000 people and drinking water for 240,000 people. In addition, 240 teaching buildings have been built and 100,000 students received financing.

The project, the first of its kind in China, involves US$113.5 million in the World Bank loans. Thanks to the project, the food problem of 3.5 million people in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guizhou Province and Yunnan Province will be solved within six years.

The project covers 900,000 poor people in twelve underdeveloped counties, with US$47.5 million used indirectly for poverty relief.
