US President-Elect Bush Resigns as Texas Governor

US President-elect Bush resigned as governor of Texas State Thursday after six years on the job that launched him toward the White House.

Bush yielded office to Rick Perry, the Republican lieutenant governor.

In a ceremony at the Texas statehouse in Austin, Texas, Bush said that serving as governor had been a higher honor than he could ever imagine, and that the only thing that would cause him to leave early would be to become president.

Bush, who takes office on January 20, claimed the US presidency on December 13 after a gracious concession by Republican Al Gore. His victory was sealed on December12 by the US Supreme Court which blocked any chance of furtherballot recounts in Florida.
