Zambian President Hails Ethiopia-Eritrea Peace Agreement

Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has described the peace agreement signed between Ethiopia and Eritrea in Algeria last week as an act aimed at bringing renewed hope for prosperity in the Horn of Africa, Zambia Daily Mail newspaper reported on Friday, December 22.

According to the report, the president said on Thursday in two separate messages to the leaders of Eritrea and Ethiopia that he hoped peace in the region will be nurtured to fruition.

"The signing has brought renewed hope for peace which will enable your people to concentrate your efforts on the resuscitation of the Eritrean economy and work towards the betterment of your lives," Chiluba said in his message to Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

In another message to Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, he said the choice of peace enhances efforts towards economic development.

"We commend your government the welfare of all Ethiopian citizens as well as your contribution towards the consolidation of unity and cooperation on African continent," he said.

On December 12, Ethiopia and Eritrea signed in Algiers, capital of Algeria a peace agreement to end the two-year-old war between the two neighboring countries.
