Gene Center for Testing Tropical Plant Diseases
A gene center for testing tropical plant diseases has been set up in this southern Chinese island province of Hainan.
It is the first of its kind in China.
The center is jointly launched by the Life Sciences College of Fudan University, Shanghai United Gene Science and Technology (Group) Co. Ltd and Hengzhi Green Science and Technology Park of Hainan. Shanghai United Gene Science and Technology (Group) Co. Ltd. is now the country's largest enterprise engaged in genome research, application and related production development.
A center spokesman said researchers have been working on gathering sample plants that have infected by tropical diseases in an attempt to build a database to record the gene forms of different types of tropical plant diseases. Such work will be finished in half a year.
Experts believe that with gene samples at hand, researchers of the center are able to find ways quickly to prevent and cure a great number of tropical plant diseases and insect pests.
