Amendments to Military Officer Laws Being Considered
The National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee are examining the proposed amendments to the law for military officers.
When explaining the draft amendments to the 19th meeting of the NPC Standing Committee, Yu Yongbo, director of the General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), said that the revised law aims at attracting and keeping more skilled personnel among the military forces.
In order to keep up with the country's economic and social development, the PLA authorities want to adjust the existing regulations for officers, said Yu, also a member of China's Central Military Commission.
As well as military cadets, graduates from colleges or universities and professionals formerly in other fields will be able to enroll as military officers, according to the draft law.
The draft law also loosens restrictions on promotion, which was traditionally done in a frigid, hierarchical order.
Meanwhile, the law stipulates housing and insurance benefits for officers themselves and favorable terms for their families.
Yu said that the special treatment will help maintain the stability among the military officers while the country is experiencing rapid development in the socialist market economy.
The legislature approved the existing law on September 5, 1988.
