Xiamen to Be Built Into an Ecological City

Approved by the State Council, Fujian's Xiamen will be built into an international modern port city featuring ecology and scenery by 2010.

According to the blueprint, the future Xiamen City will feature a new layout with star-shaped districts and suburbs surrounding the moonlike downtown area.

By then, the city will be harmoniously integrated into the nature. The most impressive for Xiamen residents will be that, within five to ten years, the green-land per capita will reach 12 square meters. Green-land and forests will cover respectively 37 percent and 40 percent of the city area. Residents will also be able to enjoy more public facilities and richer cultural life along with the development in the city construction.

For the industrial construction, the island area, where most of the residents live, will only allow to develop pollution-free high-tech industries. Outside of the island area, the industrial pollution control will be carried out alongside with the development of industry as a whole from designing to construction. All other measures will also be taken to turn Xiamen into an ecology-friendly city.
