Annan Names US Diplomat to Senior Post in UN Peacekeeping Department

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan Thursday, December 21, appointed a United States diplomat and expert in counterterrorism in the United Nations peacekeeping department.

Effective on January 2, Michael Sheehan will take up his functions as assistant secretary-general for logistics, management and mine action service in the department of peacekeeping operations.

Prior to his appointment, Sheehan served as deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs and as ambassador-at-large and coordinator for counterterrorism at the U.S. Department of State.
