Chinese Province Facing Shrinking Farmland

Despite the constant public demand for protecting farmland resources, the acreage of farmland in east China's Anhui Province has significantly shrunk during the past 50 years.

In contrast with 1952, when the province had 5.78 million hectares of farmland and a per capita area of 2.92 mu, Anhui today possesses 4.25 million hectares of farmland, with the per capita area reducing by 64.5 percent to 1.03 mu.

The gradual inhabiting of farmland and fast increase in population have aggravated the situation.
