China Issues Code for Protecting Taishan Mountain

A bylaw on management and protection of the Taishan Mountain went into effect earlier this month, marking the first time that China enhanced the protection of this famous tourism attraction with a local code.

According to the bylaw, no commercial advertisements should appear in the mountain's major tourism spots, no new construction projects should be approved in the area of its peak and all the other construction projects on the mountain should get permission first from the provincial government.

The bylaw divides the mountain and its surrounding areas into four protection zones and set up different protection standards for each of them.

The bylaw also bans quarry, excavation, interment, hunting and other demolition activities in the mountain area, and says that no such activities like filming movies should be conducted without special permission.

Neighboring the hometown of ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius (551--479 B.C.), the Taishan Mountain has long been regarded as one of the most magnificent mountains in China and has been listed as one of the world's natural and cultural heritage sites.
