Beijing to Build More Expressways

Wang Guangtao, vice mayor of Beijing Municipal Government, told news media that Beijing is going to build over 400km of expressways in the coming five to seven years to realize the goal of 600 km targeted.

Of the 400km more of expressways, about 100km have been under construction, including:

Beijing section, Beijing-Kaifeng Expressway: Extending over 42km from Yuquanying Crossroad of Beijing to terminus Gu'an Bridge bordering on Hebei Province, construction launched last April, to be completed by October 1, 2001;

First-phase highway construction project of Loop Road 1: Starting from Badaling Expressway, ending at Airdrome Expressway, 15.2km long, construction basically completed in last November, going to be open to traffic coming year;

Third-phase construction project of Badaling Expressway: Over 19.4km starting from Badaling Great Wall and terminating on the border of Hebei Province, construction launched last October, completion set by 2001;

Tongzhou-Huangcun Expressway of Loop Road 2: Over a distance of 22km, scheduled to be built and open to traffic before October 1, 2001.

In the coming five to seven years as have been planned, Beijing will have altogether 600km of expressways and an expressway network will be formed to meet the demand for economic construction and building the city into a modern metropolis in contributing to Beijing's 2008 Olympic bid.
