India Says Sanctions on Taliban Vindication of Its StandIndia on December 20 described United Nations Security Council decision to impose broad new sanctions on Afghanistan's Taliban rulers as a vindication of its consistent position, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported."The resolution is a vindication of India's position taken for a number of years," said an Indian foreign office spokesman. "We are glad that there is recognition now of our assessment and the position we have been taking." India co-sponsored the UN resolution along with Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and the United States, the PTI noted. New Delhi, while pressing for a political settlement in Afghanistan, has strongly advocated strengthening of U.N. sanctions regime against the Taliban if it failed to abandon the path of violence and connections with international terrorism, the PTI added. |
