Pak Signs Convention Against Organized Crime

Pakistan has signed the Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime, in Palermo, Italy, which is designed to combat transnational organized crime.

"The treaty, signed last Monday December 18 provides a legal framework for international cooperation to combat transnational crime. The treaty contains provisions relating to joint investigation by states," said a statement issued by Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman here on Wednesday.

Significantly, it also addresses the crime of money laundering. This should facilitate international efforts to investigate and combat corruption, the statement added.

Shaukat Umar, the Pakistan Ambassador in Vienna, where the treaty was negotiated and finalized after protracted negotiations, signed the document on behalf of Pakistan at a high level signing ceremony.
