Vietnamese President's Visit to Boost China Ties: Spokeswoman

The Vietnamese president's upcoming visit to China will create a new momentum for further strengthening mutual confidence, cooperation and friendship between the two countries, a Vietnamese spokeswoman said in Hanoi Thursday, December 21.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh said at a regular press conference that the visit to China from December 25 to 29 by Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin is the first by Luong in his capacity as the president and the second by a Vietnamese president since the two countries normalized relations in 1991.

The visit comes at a time when relations between the two countries are witnessing rapid and in-depth progress and in the context of the conclusion of the Treaty on the Demarcation of the Bei Bu Gulf, she added.

Thanh also stressed that Luong's visit to China demonstrates Vietnam's consistent policy of fostering comprehensive cooperative relations with China, maintaining and promoting the current positive and stable momentum of bilateral relations, materializing the motto of "good neighborliness, comprehensive cooperation, long-term stability and looking toward the future."

President Luong is scheduled to hold talks with President Jiang, who is also leader of the Chinese Communist Party, meet with Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China Li Peng and Premier of the State Council Zhu Rongji, Thanh said.

The two sides will sign a joint statement on the framework of cooperation toward the 21st century, the Treaty on the Demarcation of the Bei Bu Gulf, the Agreement on Fishery Cooperation on the Bei Bu Gulf and the Agreement on Cooperation in the Use of Nuclear Energy for Peaceful Purposes and the Agreement on Cooperation Between Xinhua News Agency and Vietnam News Agency, she added.

In addition to Beijing, Thanh said, the Vietnamese delegation will also visit Shanghai and Fujian Province.
