China to Launch First Ethnic Newspaper

China plans to publish the first newspaper on the life of its ethnic groups on January 1, 2001.

China Ethnic News, sponsored by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, aims at promoting the state's policies on ethnic groups and strengthening cohesion among the 56 ethnic groups throughout the country.

The newspaper is also expected to produce other weekly publications on ethnic economy, international trade, lifestyle, cultural artifacts, clothing, medicine and culture.

China Ethnic News' trial issues, released on October 18, received a warm response from domestic and overseas readers.
