More Shanghai Residents Attend Night Schools

Lamplight at small hours and classrooms full of students of various ages have become a popular scene in Shanghai these days.

According to a source with the Shanghai adult-education department, a total of over 2 million Shanghai residents have registered to attend all kinds of night schools this year.

They engage in such courses like foreign languages, arts, computer skills, occupational techniques and even housekeeping, the source said.

According to the source, Shanghai now has more than 1,000 night schools, and most of the residents go to these schools with a view to getting better job opportunities after the study.

Wang Fanghua, a professor from the Shanghai Jiaotong University, said the concept of "life-long education" is now being accepted by more and more Shanghai residents.

"In the coming three years, some 30 percent of Shanghai's residents, or over 4 million people, will participate in this after-hours schooling rush," Wang said.
