Shanghai Sets Up International Volunteers Team

China's largest city of Shanghai recently set up a volunteer organization to better serve various international exchange activities in the city.

The organization includes some 280 groups and 1,100 volunteers who speak fluent foreign languages, an official source said.

They were selected from more than 7,550 applicants through strict testing and interviewing, the source said.

"These volunteers will play a role in a number of international events held in Shanghai, including the Conference of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) next year," said Chen Liangyu, deputy mayor of Shanghai.

"After the APEC conference the volunteers team will remain in action and will continue to make contributions in other events," the official said.
