PC Giant Listed Among Top 5 Server Vendors

Chinese personal computer giant Legend joined the top five Asia-Pacific server vendors for the first time in the third quarter of the year, claiming a market share of 5 per cent, according to Gartner, a US-based research company.

Legend followed Compaq, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Dell in that order. Compaq, IBM and Hewlett-Packard combined for 55 per cent of the server market. Dell had an 8 per cent market share, having reported a "phenomenal growth" of 186 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Legend's growth in the server market was no surprise to Jennifer Wu, senior analyst for Gartner's servers programme in the Asia-Pacific region. "Legend has become a well-known household brand as a result of active promotion and support of national brands by the Chinese Government," she said.

The Gartner server market report came less than a week after it had published its study of the Asia-Pacific printers' market.

And in the printers' market report, China is again rated as the leader. The mainland entered the Asia-Pacific server marketplace in the third quarter with a unit market share of 36.3 per cent, powered by 47.6 per cent growth from the same period last year.

South Korea witnessed 124.7 per cent growth, and the entire Asia-Pacific market's growth was 35 per cent, the report stated.

China's strong growth in sales is attributed, in particular, to the "rapid expansion of the finance and telecommunications industries," according to Gartner.

The workstation market, however, is still being dominated by the international brands from Sun Microsystems, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and IBM. Together, they captured more than 85 per cent of the Asia-Pacific workstation market in the third quarter. China again led the market, followed by South Korea and Australia. China's unit market share was 22.8 per cent, experiencing a year-on-year growth of about 17 per cent.
