UNICEF Completes an Assistance Project In China

A social development assistance project sponsored by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has been nearly completed.

According to officials from the Anhui provincial government, the five-year project was designed to aid the three state key poor counties of Changfeng, Shucheng and Yuexi in east China's Anhui province.

"The project has achieved satisfied results that even exceeding our expectations," said a local official.

A survey conducted by local authorities showed that compared to 1996, when the project was started, the per capita income of farmers in the three counties had increased by 27, 69 and 74 percent respectively.

The enrollment rate in primary schools there have reached 99 percent, with the figure for girls of reaching 98 percent, the survey said.

Also as a result of the assistance project, 92 percent of the villages there have set up hospitals, and 20 percent more villagers now have access to TV.
