EU to Help Ethiopia in Post-War Reconstruction

Visiting Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Reno Serrie said Wednesday, December 20, that the European Union would be ready to assist Ethiopia in its development endeavor.

Serrie made the remarks after talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin.

Serrie, also EU special envoy, told reporters that the peace agreement signed on December 12 between Ethiopia and Eritrea was crucial in ensuring and promoting development and peace in the Horn of Africa.

The Italian official noted that Italy has allocated 140 million U.S. dollars to Ethiopia for the post-war demobilization process, reconstruction and over-all development endeavor for the coming three years.

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum said on the occasion that Ethiopia expects the reinvigoration of bilateral and multilateral relations with Italy and the EU, as well as with the international community for the reconstruction of its post-war economy.
