Shanghai Branch of US PostNet Punished for Illegal Business

A Shanghai branch of US firm PostNet was ordered Wednesday to stop running illegal postal services, including the leasing of mailboxes, according to the local administration for industry and commerce.

The shop of PostNet, based in Nevada in the United States, was found to be handling post and post-related services, which it has no right to operate according to the Postal Law of China. The eighth article of the law provides that posting and delivery services of mail and other articles with characteristics of mail shall be exclusively, operated by postal enterprises, except as otherwise provided by the State Council.

PostNet's Shanghai branch provided services such as mailbox leasing, collecting express mail to be delivered through the networks of Fedex and UPS, fax, copying, printing, making name-cards, reproduction of CD, selling stationery and Internet access.

It was illegal for the shop to provide mailbox leasing services and to use words "Post" and "EMS" (Express Mail Service) in its services, according to an official from the Shanghai Post Bureau.

Inspectors from the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce have ordered the shop to stop the illegal services.
