Russian Authorities Ready to Reconsider Gusinsky's Custody

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office announced Tuesday, December 19, that it is ready to reconsider the decision of keeping the Media-MOST President Vladimir Gusinsky in custody.

Valery Nikolayev, who is heading the investigation of the Gusinsky case, said, "If Gusinsky turns up as the investigators demand and if all necessary investigations are carried out with him, I do not see obstacles to reconsidering the decision of keeping him in custody."

"Why should we feed Gusinsky in a confinement cell at the expense of the public coffers," said Nikolayev when meeting a number of leading Russian businessmen. "He (Gusinsky) repeatedly ignored the investigators' calls and I was compelled to arrest him, " Nikolayev added.

Gusinsky, accused of mass fraud and embezzlement, was arrested last Tuesday by Spanish police near the southwestern Spanish town of Cadiz. He was previously put on the international wanted list by the prosecutor's office.

According to Nikolayev, all necessary documents for extraditing Gusinsky from Spain have been forwarded to relevant Spanish authorities.
