Former Cambodian Prime Minister Son Sann DiesSon Sann, a former Cambodian prime minister and prominent ally of King Norodom Sihanouk, died of heart failure in Paris on Tuesday aged 89, his family said.Son Sann, who was prime minister in the 1960s, headed the Khmer Peoples National Liberation Front (KPNLF) during the 1980s when it, together with the Khmer Rouge guerrilla force and Sihanouk's royalists, were battling the Hanoi-backed government in Phnom Penh. Family members gave no other details of his death or plans for his burial. An elder statesman of Cambodian politics, Son Sann lived in exile in Paris and supported Sihanouk's son, Prince Norodom Ranariddh. Before leaving Cambodia for France in May 1997, he struggled for over half a century for peace, democracy and independence for his devastated homeland. |
